Meet the Owner, Maura
Although birth is unpredictable, Maura believes strongly that compassionate care, communication, and informed choices can be the difference between an empowering birth experience and one that is traumatic.
Chicago Birth & Baby - formerly known as The Chicago Doulas, LLC - was founded in 2015 by Maura Winkler, RN, CD, IBCLC. After running a successful solo birth & postpartum doula & placenta encapsulation business for several years as MW Birth and Mama Elephant Birth Services, Maura has supported hundreds of families through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.
Maura knew that working with women was her calling from an early age. After working as a nurse assistant in labor & delivery and mother-baby units while earning her bachelor's in biology/psychology in preparation for medical school, her interest in women's health was solidified. After a year and a half in medical school, Maura was frustrated by the hurried nature of modern medicine and sought a more holistic model of care. A year off medical school brought great clarity in confirming that her true calling was to be a nurse midwife, and she completed her midwifery education in May 2017.
She has been a doula for six years and rejoices in seeing her clients have satisfying birth experiences. In addition to being a registered nurse, midwife, and certified birth & postpartum doula, Maura is also a board certified lactation consultant (IBCLC), professional placenta encapsulator, and teaches an online childbirth education course with Mama Natural. She recently collaborated with Mama Natural to produce the Mama Natural Week-by-Week Guide to Pregnancy & Childbirth.
Maura lived in the Oak Park for six years before returning to her hometown of Buffalo, New York with her craft-beer loving husband, four year old daughter, and infant son. In her abundant free time (ha!) she enjoys running (even ran a marathon during pregnancy!), preparing delicious meals incorporating local and organic food, and indulging in fair trade coffee and chocolate.
