Baby Essentials (Part II): Clothing
Picking out baby clothing is so overwhelming, particularly if you are expecting your first baby. However, it is also super fun to imagine your sweet baby wearing the cute things you select for them, particularly when you find brands that match your style and priorities. We've put together a list of our best resources for stylish, comfortable, & functional baby clothing. We also have an awesome downloadable at the end that will tell you exactly what you need for the first 3 months with your little one.
Local to the Chicago area, this chic baby boutique carries high quality, 100% organic baby basics for your little one. Consider putting their Coming Home Box on your registry, and pay special attention to their Coming Home tops, which snap at the side and are just perfect for the early days of shirt + diaper + swaddle for easy skin to skin access.
Cute, comfy staples in organic cotton are what Hanna Andersson specializes in. Their 100% organic pima cotton line for babies is the softest cotton you'll find, and their baby socks are the only ones that seem to actually stay on! Footless pajamas and rompers have a fold over cuff that prolongs the amount of time your baby can wear a single size.
This company boasts attention to styles and cultures across the world as inspiration for their brand. Each season features styles from a specific geographical area, but colors and patterns remain cohesive throughout the years which makes this brand a great one for layering. Their newborn wrap rompers are some of the softest jammies you'll find, and you can purchase layette sets that offer flexibility for mixing and matching.
For the wool-lovers among us, this fairly new company (started in 2015) offers soft merino wool staples for babies and little kids. Merino wool rarely needs to be washed--it's naturally anticrobial, which means that if you hang it to dry, even urine won't leave a smell and it can be reworn without washing. Gently hand wash with a wool soap and hang to dry on occasion; it really couldn't be easier. Snuggle gowns, rompers, crib sheets and soft swaddling blankets are items we recommend checking out here.
Here's a place to find some of the trendiest, highest quality baby clothing around. Spearmint LOVE features a variety of brands, with some of our favorites being Milkbarn, Oeuf, Briar Handmade, and Rilee & Cru. You can find almost anything you'll need for your bundle of joy from this online store.
Offering bright colors and quirky designs, Mini Boden carries a variety of kids clothing, but we especially love their bodysuits and graphic tees. If you're into nature, most of Mini Boden's clothing is inspired by animals of all kinds.
If you haven't heard, baby shoes kind of suck. They rarely stay on, it's impossible to find the right size or fit, and your baby grows out of them in a hurry. Freshly Picked brings something different to baby shoes. Their sod-soled (best for growing feet!) leather moccasins come in both classic and colorful/trendy designs and actually stay on baby feet. They're durable and well-made, so they hold up well even with new crawlers and walkers.
Patagonia brings sustainability to the world of baby clothing. Not only is everything really well made, but it's often made from recycled materials and will last through a few kids. Their puff coats, snowsuits, and buntings (both in down and fleece) are warm enough for midwest winters but are usually thin enough to be safely worn in a carseat.
